Feng Shui – The Basics

A feng shui spiral at LA Chinatown's Metro sta...Image via Wikipedia

I was recently talking with a friend of mine who was completely revamping her business and she was starting by having a Feng Shui practitioner come to her house and help her get things in good working order there, since she works out of her home. She wanted the energy to be flowing properly and for her surroundings to be peaceful and harmonious to support the work that she is trying to do.

I know that when my surroundings start to get cluttered, that is when things start to really go haywire. And in fact, that is how I first got into Feng Shui in the first place. I found a book about cleaning up your clutter and it was written by a Feng Shui practitioner – and from there, I was hooked!

I need to revisit those books of mine and get things harmonious around here, that is for sure! Here is a helpful article to help us get started:

Feng Shui – What Is It?

It sounds like the latest Oriental dish, but feng shui is actually a method of organization and design that brings harmony and peace to your home or office. Read on to learn exactly what these two words mean and how you can benefit from them.

Feng Shui is a spiritual system that began in ancient China about 3,000 years ago. There are many complex notions that go into feng shui but a simple paring down of the philosophy has become popular in the Western hemisphere today. Basically, feng shui revolves around the “chi” or energy that surrounds all life.

The words feng shui literally mean “wind water.” Both concepts are associated with prosperity and good health in the Chinese lifestyle. To have good energy flowing through your home, use the basics of feng shui.

Basics of Feng Shui

In a given living space, each room has its own energy. The energy has to be allowed to flow freely throughout the items within the room to create a total atmosphere of positive things. Who knew that a bathroom had energy? It certainly has a lot of other things, but feng shui teaches us that even a bathroom can bring calm feelings to each family member.

Getting Started – Lopan and Bagua

Practitioners of feng shui use a couple of basic tools to get started. The first tool is the compass. A compass in the woods lets you know which way is up and guides you in the right direction. The same goes for the feng shui compass also called lopan. The compass gives the practitioner a deeper sense of the energy in the home and what needs to be where in order to allow the energy to flow without restraint.

Each of the areas of your home has a different feng shui need. The compass helps to define what colors and feng shui elements need to be represented within each room. It also takes into account which element governs the lives of each person in the house.

The compass looks similar to a compass you would use while hiking. There is a compass needle in the center. The compass itself consists of several concentric circles that guide the practitioner to give you a layout of what your home needs in order to be whole again.

The other tool is the bagua. It is the energy map of the house. Using a blueprint drawing of your home, you can map out the eight areas of the energy map: South, Southeast, North, Northwest, East, Northeast, West and Southwest. Each section of the home has a governing element, color and purpose in your life.

Use the compass to properly divide your home into the eight sections creating your energy map. Knowing what portion of the home is in what area dictates the way you will organize it.

Feng shui theory says that you can affect the energy around you simply by creating a space that is favorable to your life. This involves knowing the five feng shui elements, feng shui colors and how the energy moves throughout each room in your home.

I remember the bagua – I had my whole house mapped out before and I need to do that again. I don’t remember, though, reading about the compass – that’s very interesting!

Steve Spangler and Judson Laipply

I just love Steve Spangler – all his cool videos, his funny appearances on the news and on Ellen, and all the cool, wacky, fun science stuff that he sells!

But this video, is most definitely one of my very favorites of his!!

Check it out – Judson Laipply visiting the Steve Spangler offices:

Hooked on SWAT: Dallas

I just recently found this show on Hulu and I am loving it! And how super mega cool that most of the episodes are of the Dallas SWAT team! I’m from Dallas so that totally rocks!

The funny thing is, this is an old show – and my husband knew about it three years ago. It turns out that one of the dads that was in the Indian Princesses with my hubby and daughter – is on Dallas SWAT. And he is in one of the episodes. I think it was the third one.

It’s too bad they stopped shooting it – I’m really surprised, because, I’m very interested in it. I would imagine there would be a lot of people that like this kind of thing. So it’s weird that it didn’t keep going. Oh well, at least I have eighteen episodes on Hulu to watch!

I don’t usually watch that show, but, I may just have to watch it just because iJustine is in it!!

Just A Slow Wednesday

John SchneiderJohn Schneider via last.fm

Did you guys ever see the movie, “Eddie Macon’s Run”? I knew the little kid that was in it, so of course my friends and I went and saw it. And I think we wound up seeing it quite a few times, actually.

It starred John Schneider (hunka hunka!)[even though I was a ‘Luke’ kinda girl] and there was a lady in the movie that was helping him out, for seemingly no reason at all. And he kept asking her why she was helping him. And she just kept saying:

It’s a slow wednesday.

Well, I don’t have a ‘hunka hunka’ to help out – unless you count going with my hunka hunka hubby to take our daughter to the orthodontist. But let’s see – he’ll be driving since my toe is broken, he’ll be buying dinner, since I’m broke, he’ll be paying the ortho. So yeah, that would be a hunka hunka helping me.

But I would say it’s a slow Wednesday. It’s actually kind of been a slow week for me, with this broken toe and string of headaches.

I’m just sitting around waiting to head to the orthodontist with hubby and daughter, then we have to get back over here and pick up our boys, who are actually PAID musicians today!! In our high school, if you are in the jazz band, you do paid gigs – and that helps fund the band needs. I just love saying that my boys are “Professional Musicians”!

My daughter is trying to squeeze in some baking before we have to go. When that girl gets a hankerin’ to bake or cook, there’s no stopping her! Yep – my little chef is at it again! She is making some yellow cake muffins. I’m not sure she’s really going to have time to finish them before we leave. She was hellbent on starting them, though, so we’ll see how it goes.

Ya’ll have a groovy evening. I’m gonna check on outta here!
